D.C. Creative Writing Workshop hires a new Executive Director!

JUNE 4, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The D.C. Creative Writing Workshop Announces New Executive Director!

The Board of Directors of the D.C. Creative Writing Workshop is pleased to announce the selection of Chip Patterson as its next Executive Director, effective June 19, 2007.

Mr. Patterson has previously served as Extended Programs Director at D.C. Preparatory Academy Charter School in Washington, DC, where he developed a comprehensive enrichment program which provided learning opportunities for its students in the arts by initiating and maintaining community partnerships with local arts organizations. Prior to this, Mr. Patterson held the position of Site Director at the Campagna Center in Alexandria, Virginia. Before moving from Tennessee to the Washington area, Mr. Patterson was the Assistant Director of Child and Youth Development at St. Luke's Community House in Nashville, Tennessee.

Mr. Patterson’s skills and commitment to serving at-risk youth will mesh nicely with the D.C. Creative Writing Workshop’s mission of uniting parents, teachers and professional writers-in-residence to transform the lives of at-risk youth through the joy of self-expression and the power of the written word. DCCWW serves more than 400 students every year at three schools in southeast Washington: Simon Elementary, Charles Hart Middle School, and Ballou High School. Activities include writing original poems and stories; reading and responding to creative works; performing at various public venues; producing an original adaptation of a classic Greek drama; and publishing five literary magazines each year.

DCCWW’s current Executive Director, Jamila Wade, has chosen to return to the classroom to teach secondary English at a DC public high school starting this fall. It is the Workshop’s good fortune that Nancy Schwalb, its founder and strong believer in the transformative power of creative expression, will continue as Artistic Director.

The Board of Directors is confident that Mr. Patterson will bring his many talents to meet the challenges of his new position, and we look forward to welcoming him on board.
