You
Can Help
You can help
the D.C. Creative Writing Workshop further its mission of transforming
the lives of at-risk youth through the joy of self-expression and
the power of the written word!
Thanks to the
generosity of people like you, the D.C. Creative Writing Workshop
was able to expand its programs to Simon Elementary and Ballou High
Schools. And with your help, we can continue to offer our award-winning
programs to at-risk children throughout their school careers.
According to
the National Education Association, students who participate in
the arts outperform those who don’t on virtually every measure.
In fact, students who study the arts score, on
average, 40 to 60 points higher on the verbal portion of the SAT
and 15 to 40 points higher on the math portion. However, students
in the struggling Congress Heights neighborhood have little access
to the arts. In fact, the D.C. Creative Writing Workshop offers
the only intensive literary and dramatic arts programs in the area.
Please help us continue to give these children what every child
deserves: an education that prepares them not just to survive, but
to flourish.

We work hard
to keep our administrative expenses low, so that every dollar of
your tax-deductible contribution goes directly toward our writing
programs for at-risk youth. In 2005, for example, administrative
expenses accounted for only 2.5% of our budget.
As a benefit
of donating over $25, supporters will receive a free copy of hArtworks.
hArtworks is featured in the 2006 "Poet’s Market"
as “an outstanding example of what a literary journal can
be (for anyone of any age).”
We receive financial
help from individual donors, corporate sponsors, local and national
government, and foundations. To see some of those who help us, see
Supporters.

Volunteer
At DCCWW we
can always use assistance from the community in implementing our
work. Whether it be through ongoing assistance in our after-school
program helping students edit their work, designing an e-newsletter
during the work day, planning a one time Literary Salon/Poetry Reading
for our students on the weekend, or chaperoning a trip to the theater,
there are dozens of ways that volunteers may become involved with
DCCWW. Just email Nancy Schwalb,
Artistic Director for more information on how you may become
a part of the work that we do!
